Rev. Abigail Edwards shared this poem recently in the program “Discovering Creativity via The Artist’s Way” among other places. Members requested that Abigail share it with the community.
Here’s what Abigail shares about the poem:
“This is dedicated to my friend Debra, who lost her fingers and suffered devastating burns in a fiery automobile crash when she was 19 years old. Always ready to meet life head-on and do the impossible, she went to college and became a brilliant accountant.
The last 50 years have been filled with many physical challenges, which she has met with great optimism and a big smile. This poem came to me as I was both grieving and honoring her decision to call upon the services of hospice.”
GOD AIN’T GOT NO FINGERS
God ain’t got no fingers
God ain’t got no feet
God ain’t got no hurt feelings
No heartache
No rage
No anger
God ain’t got no
Experience
Can’t smell
Or touch
Or feel
Or see
Or taste
Or hear.
Those little hands that built
The tower of me
That put together
Every experience
Condition
Sensation
Transmutation
That built a me
A separate me
A reactive me
A know-it-all me.
God ain’t got no hands.
Without me
God ain’t nothing
Without me
God is formless.
With God
I AM empty
And We are One
In the unified field
Of all possibility.
Is That Love?
