Perfect Sense is a 2011 film starring Ewan McGregor and Eva Green.
An odd epidemic appears across the globe: people suddenly lose one of their senses. At first, it’s an outbreak of loss of smell. It’s often presaged by a destructive temper tantrum. In this mix are a scientist and a chef – she’s Susan, one of a team trying to understand the epidemic; he’s Michael, charming and engaging. Susan and Michael begin a relationship in the middle of increasing chaos, as the loss of other senses plagues more people and as civil authorities try to maintain order.
We chose this movie because Perfect Sense offers a profound metaphor for non-dual awakening. As the senses fall away one by one, the film invites us to see how much of our world is constructed through conditioned perception. Before each sense disappears, a wave of overwhelming emotion sweeps the collective—like the ego’s last attempt to hold on to identity. What remains when perception dissolves is not chaos but an unexpected intimacy, a directness of being that does not rely on form. Rather than a dystopian collapse, the film suggests an unveiling: the stripping away of everything we believe we need to know reality. Our discussion may explore the film as a mirror of spiritual surrender, the end of the known, and the discovery of a deeper presence, hidden by the senses.
In addition, the movie was presented through One Who Wakes, John Mark and Cindy Stroud’s website in a program called “Waking Up to the Movies!” that can be seen on their website here Home – One Who WakesOne Who Wakes | John Mark Stroud (love offering is requested).
