Oh God! is a 1977 film starring George Burns

This month’s Movie Watchers Discussion Group movie is the 1977 film Oh, God! with George Burns, John Denver and Teri Garr. Oh, God! is a lighthearted comedy where God appears as a friendly old man to a supermarket assistant manager, Jerry Landers and chooses him to be a modern-day messenger. Skeptical and scared at first, Jerry must convince a cynical world that he is truly communicating with the Almighty, and he is to tell the world that the world can work.

This film was chosen for its light-hearted story telling…the world will end in happy laughter…and for themes such as trust and faith, as well as following Divine guidance even if we’re uncomfortable and others are doubting us. And delightfully suggests that impossible (hear and following Divine Love) is very possible and that Divine Love can reach us in any way Love would like. Oh, God! suggests we are responsible for our experiences and the state of the world, yet God does not judge, condemn or punish us. In fact, God is very kind and parental and wants to help us wake up. God knows we don’t realize what we are making (doing to ourselves) by believing and projecting egoic thoughts and feelings rather than following our heart, forgiving and joining in love. God is interested in us stopping hurting ourselves and each other, but can never force us to be our natural, unconditionally loving selves. He creatively helps Jerry make an appeal to humanity to set aside what divides us and to focus on living as our real nature as love, kindness, peace and joy to see how cared for we are in every moment.
