1. Is the Retreat House a good place for contemplation, meditation, or prayer?
Yes, that is the primary purpose of the Retreat House. Silent hours are from 9:00 PM to 11:00 AM each day. The downstairs meditation room remains silent except during group activities. Private rooms and outdoor spaces are available for solitude. We sometimes offer retreats with extended silent hours.
2. Is the Retreat House open to people of all faiths?
Yes, the Retreat House is open to people of all spiritual backgrounds, as long as the purpose is a spiritual retreat. It is not meant for vacations or other non-spiritual purposes. The Retreat House is run by Awakening Together; you can learn about our spiritual values here.
3. What should I pack for my stay?
Recommended items include:
- Water bottle and spill-proof coffee cup
- Lotion, sunscreen, sunglasses, sun hat
- Seasonal layered clothing
- Warm, non-slip socks (no shoes allowed indoors except when medically necessary)
- Robe or shawl
- Toiletries
- Comfortable walking shoes
- Snacks, protein bars
- Earphones/headphones
- Spiritual books, notebook, pen, highlighter (optional)
4. Are coffee and tea provided?
Yes, we offer a Keurig coffee machine and hot water urn for tea, available all day. You may bring your favorite tea or K-cups. Please stay hydrated, especially at the 7,000 ft elevation.
5. Is there Wi-Fi available?
Yes, Wi-Fi is provided. However, speeds may be slower than what you’re used to, especially in larger cities. Please use earbuds or headphones when listening to audio to avoid disturbing others.
6. Is there cell service?
Cell service can be spotty. We ask that you follow these guidelines to maintain a quiet environment:
- Keep your phone on silent at all times.
- Avoid phone calls during silent hours.
- Make calls privately, either in your room or outside, keeping your voice low.
7. Is an airport shuttle available?
Yes, we offer an airport shuttle service for retreats. Please visit our Shuttle Information Page for details. Car rentals and ride-sharing services like Uber or Lyft are also options. For ride-sharing, you can post on the Awakening Together “Share a Ride” Forum.
We recommend putting the dates of your trip and the airport on the post Title line. If you are flexible, put that on your Title line. Here are example titles:

8. Are meals included during my stay?
Meal availability depends on whether you’re here for a personal or organized retreat. Please contact us or check the retreat description for details. You’ll also have access to fridge and pantry space for personal food.
9. Can you accommodate special diets?
We accommodate lacto-ovo vegetarian and gluten-free diets. Please specify your dietary needs when applying. While we try to meet everyone’s needs, please remember St. Francis’ advice to accept what is served during travel.
10. Where can I buy food nearby?

11. Can I cook my own meals?
There is a microwave available during retreats. For personal retreats, please coordinate with the caretaker regarding kitchen use.
12. Are there restaurants nearby?
Yes, several restaurants are within walking distance. Some are open only on select days, so consult the caretaker for more details.
13. What if the Retreat House is full?

14. Can I volunteer at the Retreat House?
Volunteers are sometimes needed, especially for larger retreats. If you’re interested, check for volunteer opportunities on the retreat page.

16. Are there things to do in La Veta?

17. Can I donate to the Retreat House?
We accept donations of items needed in new or like-new condition. Monetary donations are always appreciated and go towards improving amenities. Please contact us about any items you have to donate.
18. May I bring my pet?
Pets are not allowed at the Retreat House.
19. May I bring alcohol?
Alcohol (beer, wine, etc.) is not permitted on the property. Restaurants in town may serve alcohol if you wish to drink outside the Retreat House. Intoxication is not allowed on the premises. If someone returns to the retreat house intoxicated, he/she will be asked to leave immediately.
20. May I smoke cigarettes?
Smoking is prohibited in and near the Retreat House, including around bushes or dry grass. If you must smoke, you can do so at the end of the driveway, but only when there is no fire ban in effect. Be cautious, as wildfires are a serious risk in Colorado. Proper disposal of cigarette ashes and cigarette butts is essential. See the retreat house caretaker for a proper container.
21. Is it okay if I smoke marijuana at the retreat house?
Although marijuana is legal in Colorado, it is not permitted at the Retreat House or in public areas of La Veta. No recreational drugs are allowed on the property.
