La Veta, Colorado is a small town in Southern Colorado’s Cuchara River Valley. La Veta’s elevation is 7,013 feet. It’s population is about 800. La Veta lies just north of the Spanish Peaks, two mountains that early native Americans believed were the home of gods and the source of life. They called the mountains “the breasts of the world.”
The East Spanish Peak is 12,683 feet (3,866 meters), and the taller West Spanish Peak is 13,626 feet (4,153 meters). Hundreds of volcanic dikes radiate from both peaks like veins carrying life from its source to the surrounding valley. In fact, La Veta means “the vein.”
