This Month's Movie: Same Kind of Different as Me
Join us Sunday, June 27th 2021 at 8 pm ET/6 pm MT.
This month's movie discussion group will be facilitated by Kelly Barber.
Summary:
In many ways, our world today is focused on divisions, on differences. Differences between people of different gender and race, between people of different economic status, between people of different belief systems. It’s easy, perhaps even natural, to find members of our same “tribe,” those who share our worldview and our demographic traits.
It’s much less natural to reach across those boundaries, to try to understand others’ experiences, to serve those who have almost nothing in common with us. It’s easier to ignore them—especially the homeless—to act as if they don’t exist.
Debby Hall doesn’t do that. She doesn’t talk much about her faith, but it obviously inspires her to act with love. She’s determined to make a positive difference, sometimes just by being present with people who haven’t been asked what their names are in a very long time.
Debby’s servant’s heart and sacrificial love has a radical impact upon her husband, Ron. And together, their love impacts Denver Moore as well, a man whose life has been nothing but one oppressive, violent experience after another.
It’s an inspiring true story, and we learn that it eventually inspired Ron Hall to record it all in a book. Together, he and Denver helped to raise a reported $90 million (according to Ron Hall) for homeless shelters across the country—a remarkable harvest reaped from the seeds planted by his wife’s simple-but-profound love.
Along the way, this profound story reminds us that no matter how deep the differences that separate us, just a bit of love may help us to see others’ dignity instead of choosing not to see them at all.

Dan Millman, currently studying at UC-Berkeley, is a world class gymnast specializing in the rings, hence his nickname "Lord of the Rings". He works hard, training seven days a week, fifty weeks out of the year. In the lead up to the Olympic trials in just over a year, he knows he could be the best in the world and win Olympic gold, but his constant overthinking especially having the constant fear that it will all be taken away, leads to inconsistency and self-doubt. With his innate skill in a sport he loves, a 4.0 GPA, and all the sex he wants, he knows he should be happy - he telling people that he is so - but if he were to look deep in his heart, he knows he isn't. One of the symptoms of his life is that he has insomnia. It is during one of his sleepless nights that he meets an older service station operator he sarcastically nicknames Socrates for his philosophical musings. Beyond Socrates' mumbo-jumbo, Dan cannot ignore what appears to be Socrates' almost other worldly physical feats, something of which Dan can only dream for himself. As such, Dan convinces Socrates to take him under his wing to teach him how to achieve such feats. At times, Socrates is a reluctant teacher as Dan is not grasping the meaning of what he is trying to convey. Similarly, Dan is sometimes a reluctant pupil not grasping how what Socrates tells him will help him achieve Olympic gold. Through the process, Dan does admit that some of what Socrates imbues in him leads to what Dan views as success. However, it isn't until what Dan strives for the most seems to be threatened in its entirety that he may fully understand Socrates' goal for him of true inner peace, which is at the heart of any warrior.
