In preparation for the retreats, this is the second in a series of questions answered by Timothy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #4e387e;\">Q:\u00a0<i>Why are we here in the first place?<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #4e387e;\">This, along with many other similar \u201cwhy\u201d questions, can, of course, be \u201canswered\u201d\u2014e.g., \u201cto love and serve and to enjoy the adventure of being the Formless playing the dance of Form.\u201d Yet \u201cwhy\u201d is more usefully re-directed to\u00a0<i>How<\/i>\u00a0is it that there is an arising sense of self and world at all?<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #4e387e;\">A related \u201cwhy\u201d-question is \u201cWhy did the Divine Self dream up this painful illusory world and self-sense?\u201d This, too, can be therapeutically shifted to \u201cPrecisely how is it that I identify with and problematize any painful situations and self-sense?\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #4e387e;\">Q: <i>\u201cSo, \u2018how\u2019 come there is suffering?\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #4e387e;\">One can always point the questioner back to classic Advaitin or Buddhist self-enquiry, \u201cWho or What is aware of \u2018suffering\u2019?\u201d The knowing Awareness, after all, must be quite different in kind from its object. This\u00a0<i>Changeless<\/i>\u00a0Principle Right Here recognizes various\u00a0<i>changing<\/i>\u00a0emotional, mental, psychic and physical states like suffering, ennui, loss, desire. The Changeless Awareness is not part of or tied to those changeful aspects of experience. If the person further responds, \u201cwell it feels like my suffering is changelessly part of my life,\u201d one can reply, \u201cwhere is it, then, in deep, dreamless sleep?\u201d as evidence that suffering comes and goes and is not always, changelessly part of one-self.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #4e387e;\">But it is also therapeutically useful to sometimes speak on a more conventional, psychological level by\u00a0<i>distinguishing between intensity, pain, and suffering<\/i>. Basically, any form of physical or emotional\u00a0<i>pain<\/i>\u00a0is a form of\u00a0<i>intense energy<\/i>\u00a0that one does not know how to process psycho-physiologically. There is an ancient, evolutionary programming within different species to perceive and judge certain intense stimuli: \u201cOwww! Painful!\u201d Without this discrimination, most animal species never would have survived, lacking incentive to run away from predators chomping on one\u2019s limbs. So\u00a0<i>pain<\/i>\u00a0is a useful alarm signal.\u00a0<i>Suffering<\/i>\u00a0comes in with neurotically self-obsessing thoughts like \u201cWhy is God always doing this to me?\u201d or \u201cI must have lots of really bad karma to have this happen to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #4e387e;\">One can drop the \u201csuffering\u201d of certain painful situations by letting go inner judgments, resentments, regrets, expectations and the sense of being the hapless target-entity afflicted by cruel outside forces, and instead simply\u00a0<i>notice pain<\/i>, along with intelligently making any changes needed (e.g., pulling the hand away from the fire or moving beyond a chronically abusive relationship). This shift from conflicted suffering to fully experiencing pain is well-known to many professionals working in pain-management clinics, where the emergent wisdom has been to teach clients how to meditatively\u00a0<i>be-the-pain<\/i>. Studies indicate that many people\u2019s felt-sense of even physical pain actually diminishes considerably, by up to 80%, by focusing upon pain\u2019s raw sensations and not getting entangled in self-obsessing\u00a0<i>thoughts about<\/i>\u00a0the pain and its relation to \u201cme.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #4e387e;\">Marathon runners, swimmers, cyclers, weight-lifters et al. routinely take on extremely painful situations while training. Their muscles and entire physiology painfully \u201cscream\u201d as these athletes repeatedly go beyond their normal felt-sense of physical and mental limits, stretching into greater excellence. Most persons suddenly placed into this stressful situation of athletic training would complain of being put into hell. But athletes seek out this situation\u2014they know they can \u201cbecome the pain\u201d and realize it as\u00a0<i>passionately-intense energy<\/i>. It\u2019s not just that the body-mind starts releasing endorphins and other natural pain-managing chemistry. No, these aware athletes often feel that they\u2019ve been released into nondual aliveness,\u00a0<i>pure intensity<\/i>\u2014no more subject of experience, object of experience or dualistic process of experiencing.\u00a0<i>Just pure experiencing<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #4e387e;\">This is, notably, one of the very definitions of\u00a0<i>Brahman<\/i>\u00a0in [the classic nondually-oriented Hindu medieval text]\u00a0<i>Yoga V\u00e2sishtha<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #4e387e;\">Likewise, we \u201cbecome one with\u201d any painful physical or emotional situation upon losing the dualistic sense of subject and object and realizing we are really this Formless Awareness\u00a0<i>nondually being various forms of intensity<\/i>. This is\u00a0<i>Shiva<\/i>\u00a0experiencing ItSelf as\u00a0<i>Shakti<\/i>, Awareness experiencing ItSelf as the sacred world of intense energy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #4e387e;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.enlightened-spirituality.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">www.enlightened-spirituality.org<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Timothy Conway will be a retreat leader at the Awakening Together Retreats held in Santa Barbara, California this September.
