{"id":2264,"date":"2013-08-12T15:41:09","date_gmt":"2013-08-12T21:41:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/Awakening-Together.org\/?p=2264"},"modified":"2017-08-18T20:05:23","modified_gmt":"2017-08-19T02:05:23","slug":"accepting-change-by-karen-ann-berg-raftakis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/awakening-together.org\/dev2\/accepting-change-by-karen-ann-berg-raftakis\/","title":{"rendered":"Accepting Change, by Karen Ann Berg-Raftakis"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>There&#8217;s a music video by Madonna called \u201cRay of Light\u201d which I\u2019ve always liked.\u00a0 It features very rapidly changing, flashing pictures of people all over the world going about their everyday lives, \u201cliving\u201d, the sequences running so fast that the effect is almost dizzying.\u00a0 There have been a few instances this past year when similar images of time-lapsed video have popped into my mind and I\u2019ve been left with the impression that Life is just a giant constant birthing, growing, evolving, moving, deteriorating, dying &#8220;happening&#8221; and there\u2019s nothing we can do about it.\u00a0 We watch the rapidly shifting landscapes appear and disappear as this moving train we&#8217;re on called Life speeds by.\u00a0 We can never really take in or actually absorb anything, for it is all going by at the speed of light.\u00a0 It\u2019s all just happening and\u00a0we\u2019re just part of the process.<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div>As soon as we&#8217;re born, we quickly learn that nothing ever stays the same and yet we spend most of our lives trying to ensure that it does.\u00a0 For example, \u201cMy family should never move\u201d, \u201cMy circle of friends needs to remain the same\u201d, \u201cMy husband is not supposed to change\u201d or similar thoughts appear in our consciousness from time to time.\u00a0 We even become annoyed or angry when people simply change their minds.\u00a0 \u201cYou said you wanted steak for dinner\u201d, \u201cYou promised we\u2019d go on vacation this year\u201d, \u201cI thought you never wanted kids\u201d\u00a0 In politics, we even disdainfully call these individuals \u201cflip-floppers\u201d.\u00a0 However, vows, contracts, and promises are all formed in the context of hoped for permanence and then later we wonder why so many of these are broken.\u00a0 It appears that anything which has the semblance of standing still in time perpetuates the illusion that it is real and permanent.\u00a0 It also helps keep our idea of ourselves as separate individuals safe and secure.\u00a0 That is why sudden, abrupt drastic changes often make us feel like the rug has been pulled out from under us.\u00a0 We become agitated, upset, depressed or angry.\u00a0 We expect and demand that everything remains as it is, static.\u00a0 This is true sometimes even when things aren\u2019t going so well.\u00a0 Say you lose a job that you despise.\u00a0 Even though you don\u2019t miss the job itself, you may miss the stability, financial and otherwise that it brought you and so even losing something you hate can bring you grief.\u00a0 Many of us just fear any kind of change at all.\u00a0 It seems as if we really do live by that popular idiom, \u201cbetter the devil you know than the devil you don\u2019t\u201d.<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div>It&#8217;s easy for some to say, \u201cJust go with the flow\u201d when life quickly becomes a series of twists and turns and sharp detours,\u00a0 but how exactly do we do that?\u00a0\u00a0 We can either resist change or surrender to it and as we know, resisting is much more painful.\u00a0 Remembering that we are NOT our specific situations or circumstances might help.\u00a0 These things which seem to be happening \u201cto us\u201d are just occurrences in this dance called Life, which allows ALL things. \u00a0It&#8217;s interesting, my parents like to go on these motorcoach &#8220;mystery&#8221; tours from time to time, where they don&#8217;t tell you what your destination will be. You never know where you&#8217;re going or what you&#8217;re going to be doing each day of the tour.\u00a0 There is no itinerary. \u00a0Sometimes that is how I like to look at life, as one GIANT mystery tour.\u00a0 How exciting to not know where you&#8217;re going to end up day after day.\u00a0 What a grand adventure!\u00a0 My parents trust that after it&#8217;s all said and done they will have had a great time and so they look forward to these trips.
