Tips from Regina ~ For Week One on Lessons 1-3

January 17, 2017 By Regina Dawn Akers

Hi Everyone,

I decided to share these notes from my Week One Gentle Healing Journal because it may be helpful to some of you as you walk through the purification process. I will continue to share anything from my journal that I feel may be helpful. You can share from your journals in The Forum for your Gentle Healing Group, if you want to.

Note that I do not journal everyday at this point in the process. As we go deeper into the Year 1, I will journal everyday.

Love, Regina

Day 1

I just completed Lesson 1 for the morning. I noticed that the mind did not want to focus on the reading of Lesson 1. During the exercise it wanted to run ahead of the item I was on and pick the next item for the exercise. I also briefly noticed meanings that had been given to objects. I could see that the mind seeks identification with pretty nails, sore feet, cluttered tabletop, etc. I could also see that the purpose of these meaningless identifications is identification of awareness with thought. The meaningless identifications, whether they are positive or negative identifications, have the purpose of marrying awareness with thought as if ‘I am thought.’

Workbook Lesson 1 asks us to make no allowance for difference in the kinds of things to which today’s idea applies. As I see it, that is because there is only one purpose at work in every attached meaning, and that is identifying awareness with thought.

The instructions for Workbook Lesson 1 say that the exercise should not be ritualistic. The mind has the ability to repeat something, like a trained monkey repeating tricks. This could be called mindless mind. In mindless mind, awareness is distracted. For example, I can say, “That TV does not mean anything” while thinking about an email I need to write later today. This distraction is an ego preservation technique, because nothing is seen in the process. In other words, awareness has not become aware. When nothing is seen, nothing is healed.

The instructions also say “a comfortable sense of leisure is essential.” The comfortable sense of leisure is the peace that comes when awareness is fully present. With this “comfortable sense of leisure,” seeing happens.

In The Way of Mastery, Lesson 1, it was said, “I have done all this; I must undo it.” But it is important to note that it also said, “But I have no idea how I did this. Therefore, I must surrender to something else.”

The mind, which has the purpose of identifying awareness with thought, cannot be trusted to heal this misidentification. Something else must guide this healing process. That is intuitive wisdom, which comes from the part of awareness that is not identified with thought. Intuitive wisdom is much more subtle than thought, but it is very clear in its wisdom.

(From this point forward, I will use the term “attention” to refer to the part of awareness that is identified with thought and the term “clear awareness” to refer to the part of awareness that is not identified with thought.)

NTI Luke, Chapter 12 says, “What you are focused on, and have always been focused on, is thought. In every moment in your seeming interaction with the world, you are focused on thought.”

In the previous sentence, clear awareness is talking to attention. The “you” in the sentence is attention.

You, attention are focused on thought.

Clear awareness is pointing out the misidentification that has occurred.

Day 2

NTI teaches that everything we experience on the path of healing is either willingness or resistance. It equates willingness with joy and resistance with delay.

Willingness is the quality or state of being prepared to do something.

Joy is the emotion evoked by well-being.

The student of healing wants to learn the difference between the feeling of willingness/joy/well-being and the feeling of resistance.

Willingness could be said to be a feeling that might say (if it had a voice), “Okay. I see what is going on here. This is not comfortable, but I have decided to heal. Therefore, I am grateful for this healing opportunity, which is presenting itself now.” That attitude has readiness and well-being in it; therefore it is willingness/joy.

Resistance can be experienced in a variety of ways, but it does not have readiness or the sense of well-being in it. Some examples of resistance are believing you are guilty or unworthy, being worried, blaming another, getting defensive, being distrustful, fearing the future, resenting authority, stress and not wanting to do your spiritual practice.

NTI Luke, Chapter 12, recommends, “When resistance arises in your mind in any form, let it go immediately in gratitude as valueless.” This describes a method of returning to willingness.

A return to willingness may start with remembering that you want healing. That may be followed by remembering that in order for something to heal, it needs to be seen (brought into awareness). You can feel grateful that this has been brought into awareness so it can be healed. You can remember you have given this all the meaning it has for you, and then you can choose to rest from that meaning. Resting from meaning (resting from believing) gives clear awareness the opportunity to heal the misidentification of attention with thought. (It allows the old neural pathway to dry up and enables a new, healthier neural pathway to be drawn in the brain.)

Be aware that healing occurs through recognition (seeing) and resting. That is your job in healing. Clear awareness does the rest. (Clear awareness can be equated to the Holy Spirit.)

Rest, Accept and Trust (RAT) is a simple reminder of your job in the healing process.

  1. Rest the mind by withdrawing your attention/belief from obsessive thinking. If that is challenging, try positive healing-focused self-talk such as, “Ok, just breathe now. Take a deep breath. Now another. This is okay. This is coming up now because I have decided to heal. I want to heal. And in order to heal, things must come up. I am happy this is here, but I do not want to give it my attention. I want to rest attention away from this so it can be healed. I will focus attention on my breath. I trust healing is happening. I am happy for this opportunity.” Etcetera or something similar.
  2. Accept the feeling. Allow it to be. Realize that as this feeing comes into awareness and is seen, it is healing. Stay out of the way. Do not try to change anything. It is just a feeling, an emotional energy and nothing more. Let it be as it is. Be grateful that healing is mysteriously occurring.
  3. Trust that healing is occurring. You have done your part by resting and accepting. Clear awareness (God, Holy Spirit) is taking care of everything else. You have gotten out of the way so healing can happen. That is all you were asked to do.
Day 3

The brain is reprogrammed as attention’s misidentification with thought is healed. There are some things we can do to assist in the reprogramming of the brain.

  1. An open-heart increases efficacy. Examples of an open heart are:
    1. Have a positive spiritual aspiration or purpose. For example, one may want to see with the eyes of God or know Love as the only reality.Note: If your goal has a negative focus such as, “I want to stop suffering,” consider a positive focus that feels genuine and authentic for you. For example, you may want freedom, happiness or lightness. A positive goal is much more effective than a negative goal because attention is focused on the ideas stated in your goal. It is much better to have attention focused on the idea of freedom or lightness than it is to have attention focused on the idea of suffering.
    2. Maintain a sense of well-being. One way to maintain a sense of well-being when the crap is coming up is to remember that the thought-stream or emotion is coming into awareness because you want to heal. Remembering that healing is what you want is extremely helpful.
    3. Trust that healing is occurring.
  2. Repetition & practice with new programming. Examples of new programming include resting the mind, remembering the daily lesson, thinking about your spiritual aspiration, etc.
  3. Visualization. For example, imagine yourself resting the mind, imagine yourself remembering to do the workbook lessons, imagine yourself wanting awakening/truth more than anything else, etc. The brain cannot tell the difference between something real and something imagined. Research shows that anytime you are thinking (including imagining) you are engaged in conditioning neural pathways.
  4. Meditation. Meditation is concentrated rest away from mental activity. Therefore, it gives clear awareness ample time to heal the mind.
  5. Observe/watch old programming without feeding it. Be aware of it, but don’t believe it and don’t fight against it. As you observe old programming in action, watch with a sense of curiosity. Become familiar with your triggers. For example, you might watch old programming to discover what it feels like in your body just before an old neural pathway begins to fire. (e.g., What happens in me just before I scream at my daughter?)
  6. Discover how you can stay motivated to stick with gentle healing because you want to. Healing is an authentic journey for you when you are aware that you are on this journey because you want to be here.

The Ego is Not the Devil – Scribed by Regina Dawn Akers

January 15, 2017 By Regina Dawn Akers

The Ego is Not the Devil
Scribed by Regina Dawn Akers, February 13, 2005

The ego is not the devil. It isn’t a force outside of you that finds pleasure in deceiving you. It isn’t anything to struggle against or to fear, although it can feel as if it is.

The ego is a mistake that you believe in. The power of belief is undeniable. What you believe is real for you. Since you believe in separateness and attack, the world seems threatening to you. That is what you believe, that is what you experience, and that is what you fear. The experience of a threatening world seems real to you, and I don’t ask you to deny that seeming reality. I don’t ask you to step in front of a moving car and trust that it will not hit you, because it may. It would be dependent on the alertness and reaction of the driver behind the wheel. In this way, the world is real.

What I ask you to understand is that the “reality” comes from the belief. The belief is the cause of all that you experience. You make the world you experience.

Now you may ask, “If I change my belief about the world, will I see no more sickness, no more war and no more threat?” I’ve answered this for you before in many ways, but I will put the answers together for you now so you may see what seem to be pieces as a whole.

You are not an individual. Everyone that you experience in the world is a part of you. You are aspects of one mind. When I say that the world you experience is made by you, I am not referring to you as an individual. That would indicate that separateness is truth. When I say that the world you experience is made by you, I am referring to all aspects of the mind that believe in separateness. As one aspect of the mind lets go of the belief in separateness, more Light is brought into the whole mind. It helps to rouse the Sonship, but as the Sonship continues to sleep, nightmares of separateness continue in the world.

When I indicate that what you will see will change, the word “see” and the word “perceive” are synonymous. As long as you see a world, you perceive. I am not saying that a violent crime could occur around you and that others would see it and you would not. The body’s eyes will continue to show you the seeming actions within the world of illusion. When I say you will see differently, I mean that you will perceive differently, or to be even more clear, that you will feel differently about what you see. Your perspective will be different. Your feelings will be different and therefore, your action will be different. Remember the story of Jesus and the adulteress. Jesus saw the men that were preparing to stone this woman and he saw a woman who had seemingly broken the laws of Moses. His eyes did not show him anything different. But, Jesus did feel differently about what he saw. He saw the woman as innocent and he saw the men as innocent. So, he did not condemn the woman and he did not condemn the men. He acted in a way that was consistent with his perception and caused a change in events.

Peace Pilgrim also has many stories that demonstrate that her eyes showed seemingly dangerous situations, but her perception showed only a call for Love. Because she consistently reacted with Love, it caused a turn of events based on the introduction of Light into the situation.

On what seems to be a micro level, an introduction of Light into a seemingly dark situation can change the events as they were about to occur. This may appear to be a miracle of events, but it is not. It is Light within an aspect of the mind shining away darkness within the same mind, resulting in a change in form. The cause is in the mind. The results seem evidenced in form.

The same miracle can occur on what seems to be a macro level. This may look different in the world of form; it may seem that it takes involvement from more individuals in order to introduce lasting peace into the international situation, but if you remember that there are no individuals, you will see that it is the same cause and effect.

I’ve told you before that your only responsibility is to accept the atonement for yourself. Now, you must see how important it is that you let the Light come into awareness in your mind. You must also see how you do this on behalf of all of your brothers. Light within the mind is Light within the mind, and the entire mind benefits from the shining of that Light. There can be no exceptions.

I see that you are willing to do this for your brothers. I see that you are willing to let your perspective be changed from that of a seeming individual to Oneness, but you are finding it difficult. You are experiencing fear and you do not know what to believe. You aren’t certain what is truth and what is illusion. Even as you sit writing this with me, you wonder if you are making this up or if you are hearing the Voice for God, and you don’t know how to be sure.

I will tell you how to be sure. I’ve told you this before. Pay attention to how you feel. Let the feelings of Light guide you. Do what you are told to do while you feel those feelings. When the feelings of darkness are upon you, take no action. Spend that time giving the feelings over to me. If you act with the Light and refrain from acting with the darkness, you will be acting in accordance with Truth and Light, and you will be moving steadily along the path to enlightenment. Know also that the end of this path is certain and enlightenment is a reasonable goal since it is the only goal that can truly be obtained. However, don’t crave the goal so much that it becomes an individual desire. That will delay the result, since the cause of enlightenment can never be the desire to attain for the individual.

The ego is nothing but a belief in your mind. When the belief is gone, you will see that the ego was nothing.

Letting Go of Blame – Satsang by Chris Celine

January 14, 2017 By Regina Dawn Akers

Barbara Deurwaarder has transcribed Chris Celine’s Satsang, Letting Go of Blame.

Here is an excerpt from this Satsang:

Blame keeps the sad game going. You can keep blame in your back pocket, ready to pull it out like an identity card when you believe it’s necessary. But it’s a game that you’re playing. It’s a game that needs to be recognized for what it is because it keeps the sad game going. It will keep you imprisoned in your own slavery to your own identity. In the world it feels actually somewhat delicious…to blame, because to blame and to judge has a distortion of a sense of power. Your righteousness feeds you in blaming and in being right. Blame feeds the separate self and feeds the righteousness of separation. It feeds that insanity that you really do know. And that sense of knowing gives you a sense of…it’s a distortion…but the ego makes it feel like power. There’s a certain power that comes from…it’s not real power because it has no value. But it feels like power.

… And in the belief that it’s real to you, you suffer with it, not making the connection of where the suffering is coming from. But the suffering is coming from the refusal to let go of blame. The refusal to let go of being righteous…that righteous indignation of being right about what you think you know, about what everybody has done and what everybody seemingly continues to do. When you believe that the past is the problem and you believe that the past is where all your pain comes from rather than it’s coming from your own mind and your own belief of the past that you made…. What happens is that you keep making the same story again and again and again and again and everybody disappoints you and everybody turns against you and everybody is suspiciously held and everybody is right on the edge of betraying you.

… When you believe in blame, you believe in separation. And there’s no healing possible there until you’re ready to truly surrender all the ideas of wrongdoing, of being unfairly treated, of blaming for anything, of believing the past and the goals that you gave to everyone. And, all the roles you’re giving to everyone now. It doesn’t matter what shape or form they take, you have to let go of the roles that you’ve given to them, so that you can let go of the roles that you’ve given to yourself, because it’s all the same. It’s all the pain and the suffering.

The Awakening of Bill Thetford, Co-Scribe of A Course in Miracles: An Article Written for Awakening Together by Carol Howe

January 10, 2017 By Regina Dawn Akers

Many people today are finding it ever more difficult to see the humorous and fun in every day life, besieged as we are by dire predictions and the sensational and emotionally driven content of our “news” sources. Thus, this is a perfect time to introduce Bill Thetford, co-scribe of A Course In Miracles, without doubt one of the funniest and wittiest human beings in my long experience.

We have heard from many sources that laughter is the best medicine, but that clearly depends. Some laughter is a defense against situations that might require our “getting real,” or an inappropriate response to a difficult situation, or a thinly-disguised cover for a put-down.   Since egos want to be taken seriously, nothing is so humiliating as being the brunt of a joke, of having our words or actions worthy only of demeaning laughter.

On the other hand, Bill Thetford, co-scribe of A Course In Miracles, with sparkling wit and a bit of the mischief-maker, was masterful at using laughter in the most effective, kindly, and healing way, both for himself and everyone around. If ever there was one who learned to joke about the absurdity of the human condition, it was Bill. He was graced with a superb sense of humor, delighting in the antics, large and small, of both himself and his fellow human beings. A prayer in the liturgy of the Episcopal Church begins, “Almighty God, unto whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid, . . .” Bill was a mortal version of that omniscience; for him his fellow man was deeply transparent, an open book – and often a comic book. Nothing was too sacred or ominous for his lighthearted touch, his hallmark as he saw the comedy in the ego’s serious postures. He laughed not at people, however, but at our treasured notions, beliefs, and practiced self-deceptions.

Bill was brilliant and famous in his field of research psychology even before the Course became the centerpiece of his life. He carried out his myriad duties with prodigious industry and careful attention to detail, but no matter how diligently he approached his work at Columbia University, he also found it amusing. Without exception, all who knew him commented on his marvelous sense of humor and its profound effect; it was one of his ways of loving.

He had his own issues, of course, times that seemed depressing or fraught with difficulty, but sooner or later, his emotional equilibrium would be restored, the twinkle returning to his eye as he told his hilarious stories. When we can laugh at the dramas, the formerly unhappy circumstances in our lives, we know they are healed. With a rigid, humorless approach to any aspect of our lives, we still have work to do. Bill’s droll sense of humor pervaded his life and is the single characteristic I believe he would most want remembered.

Those of us who knew Bill can remember hilarious times with him, where we all laughed until we cried. One of his favorite early Course stories, told with kindhearted laughter, was about a gentleman who discovered his address in Manhattan and came knocking on his door. When Bill answered, the man earnestly announced that he was a new ACIM student and that the Holy Spirit told him to find Bill and ask him for $10,000. Without missing a beat, Bill responded that the Holy Spirit had already alerted him to this request and indicated he was not to give it to him. I can still see Bill’s delighted smile as he recounted such entertaining tales about humankind in general and Course-related drama in particular.   He often said he thought he should write a book entitled A Course In Miracles Follies about the craziness that occurred while bringing this material into the world, as well as some of the strange ideas and misperceptions that have been perpetuated in its name. To his credit, he found these occurrences amusing rather than alarming, and we would all benefit from emulating his open-hearted approach.

Bill also recounted endless funny stories from his Columbia University days. For instance, he delighted to talk about being co-editor of the Journal of Abnormal Psychology from 1965-1971, the years of Course dictation. He periodically rejected articles that were “not sufficiently scientific,” and, of course, found this situation ridiculous and very humorous, given the teachings of non-duality in which he was secretly involved!

To experience life with richness and delight requires witnessing our circumstances as well as participating in them – in effect, not taking ourselves so seriously. Egos want to be important and see lightheartedness as a threat. Bill modeled that perfect balance between levity and honoring one’s worldly commitments to the fullest. He ended many a conversation with a twinkle in his eye, saying “I know it’s hopeless, just not serious.” He could see the agony and the glory of the human experience and smile at it all. He did not laugh at those who came to him for help, but was always able to offer those even in greatest distress a way to see their situation with a lighter heart.

Bill came to an awakened state by the end of his life. His joy and sense of humor increased exponentially until he could hardly keep his feet on the ground, quite literally. And how might we find that, despite the ways things look now, they can always resolve into a surprisingly satisfactory state? Like Bill, we can practice letting go of the judgments that weigh us down, that cause a clouded, limited, and somber experience of life. One day at at time, Bill chose to let go of grievances and asked for help in so doing. We automatically become more lighthearted and friendly, and life becomes richer and more fun, when our minds are cleared of the debris of fear and all that we hold against ourselves and others.

How dearly we would love to have Bill with us today (actually, I’m sure he’s right here!), leading the way in seeing the craziness of our current times as worthy of a huge smile, and not despair. Though it may seem a daunting task, we too can treat ourselves and others with more compassion, and following in Bill’s steady footsteps, find ourselves in the glorious state of being awake to the truth of our being – the single most fun and most helpful offering we bring to the world.

Self Differentiated Living and Leading – 4-Week Mini-Series for the New Year with Martha Creek. Starts Sunday, 1/8/17

January 4, 2017 By Regina Dawn Akers

This 4-week training is open to anyone on a path of self-realization with an interest in developing awareness and skills in the following areas:

    • Persons follow an inner compass. They are guided by their own clear and coherent beliefs, principles and life goals.
    • Persons take responsibility for self. They are aware of their own feelings, and neither blame others for them nor require others to share those feelings. They ask themselves regularly “What can I learn from this situation?”
    • Persons respond to anxiety. They anticipate and recognize heightened anxiety (due to change, loss, crisis, etc.) and accept periods of tension as they address issues and complete tasks.
    • Persons are challenged. They allow persons to work through times of stress or pain. They tolerate the discomfort that can go along with the stresses and strains of both significant mission and individual growth.
    • Persons respect boundaries. They recognize and respect where one person ends and another begins. Agreed upon roles, structures and procedures are respected. Individual thoughts and feelings are respected. There is little pressure to “Go Along” with the group.
    • Persons stay in contact. They resist tendencies to distance or cut off from those with whom there is disagreement. They work together for a sufficient amount of time to maintain relationships.

We will also address some things to QUIT in the new year including:

    8 Quits

    1) Quit Being Afraid of What Others Think

Anchor your wholeness in the love of God/Creator. Quit relying on the approval and acknowledgment of others for your sense of self worth.

    2) Quit Lying

Live truly free to unrelenting honesty with yourself, God and others. Quit pretending everything is fine, when it is not and change your life.

    3) Quit Dying to the Wrong Things

Receive the many gifts god has provided for you that nurture and delight your soul. Quit dying to those things that bring you life.

    4) Quit Denying Anger, Sadness and Fear

Embrace your God given humanity by paying attention to your “difficult” emotions and discerning how God wants to come to you through them. Quit ignoring feelings.

    5) Quit Blaming

Take responsibility for your own life and happiness. Quit giving away your God given personal freedom and power.

    6) Quit Overfunctioning

Don’t do for others what they could and should do for themselves. Quit trying to control people and situation.

    7) Quit Faulty Thinking

Choose to live in reality and truth rather than with distorted thinking. Quit making assumptions that will leave you powerless and in unnecessary pain.

    8) Quit Living Someone Else’s Life

Take up the challenge of living your God given, unique, unrepeatable, life and destiny.

    About Martha Creek:

As a speaker, minister, leader, coach, consultant, facilitator, Martha Creek is often described as having a spirit of innocence, playfulness, compassion and generosity; all of which support her in being able to deliver a great deal of information in a profoundly simple, dynamic, personal, humorous, and attainable way.

The practices, exercises and experiences Martha offers invites participants to approach their inner work as an adventurer with a sense of curiosity and wonder.  Being a master of the art of right questioning, Creek, in her workshops calls forth the most stubborn, self-defeating and embedded patterns in participants with an invitation to a new reality.

Martha is more interested in being present to those she is serving than in talking about what she has accomplished, and her accomplishments are enormous. They include: bachelor degrees in Accounting, Human Resources, and Organizational Management: a graduate degree from Emerson Theological Seminary. A Message from Regina Regarding Her Teachings in the Awakening Together Sanctaury

December 24, 2016 By Regina Dawn Akers

Hi Everyone!

Let me take this opportunity to wish you a heartfelt Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

I am writing to let you know about a new teaching I will offer in 2017, and to let you know about a change to the way I will post my audios in 2017.

Consistent, Gentle Healing

Starting on Tuesday, January 10, I will offer a new teaching on Tuesday evenings from 8-10pm ET, 5-7pm Pacific. This teaching will be called “Consistent, Gentle Healing.” It isn’t a teaching as much as it is a new Awakening Together Group.

Since the Fall Retreat in Colorado Springs, I have been feeling it is time for me to lead a group of committed students from their present state of mind to a more purified, more awakened state of mind. This is the group that will begin on January 10.

I am looking for committed students who would like to make consistent, gentle progress toward genuine peace, joy and love. This group will meet weekly and will be committed to specific assignments and practices between group meetings.

In the beginning, all that you need to participate in this group are copies of A Course in Miracles and The Holy Spirit’s Interpretation of the New Testament (NTI). As we move forward as a group, there may be additional books that we will purchase and go through together, but these two books are enough in the beginning. Although I fully support the Sparkle and Original Edition of A Course in Miracles, I feel it is best as a group that we all work with the same version of the Course. Therefore, I recommend the Foundation for Inner Peace version of the Course for this group. I have selected this version of A Course in Miracles simply because it is the first version that I worked with, and it is the most-commonly owned version of A Course in Miracles in the world today.

If this Awakening Together group calls to you, I recommend arranging your personal schedule so that you can participate in the group live. However if this is not possible, audios will be posted and you can participate by listening to the audios.

Several friends have asked me if one needs to ‘register’ for this group. Nope. All you have to do is come. You may join us in one of two ways: In the Awakening Together Sanctuary or at Ken Gibson’s house in Pueblo West, CO. If you live in the Pueblo area and would like to meet with us in person, contact me for directions.

Where to Find My Audios

Over the past several months I have been posting my teachings on awakening-together.org and on reginadawnakers.com. However, this makes twice as much work for me and I feel I need to be more efficient with my time. Therefore, starting immediately here is how you can access my audio teachings:

The Guiding Light – Posted at reginadawnakers.com under Audios.

awakening-together.org – You can subscribe to awakening-together.org under Join Us, Subscribe to Daily Updates and receive a daily post with all new audios.

Enjoy the downtime that traditionally falls between Christmas and New Year’s Day. I look forward to everything that will come to us in 2017.

Love, Regina

Introduction to Jesus of the New Testament – Class Starts in January

December 23, 2016 By Regina Dawn Akers

OurFriendJesus

This class is 4 weeks long.

For centuries, Christian mystics have awakened to truth by contemplating the teachings of Jesus as written in the New Testament. What did they see in his teachings that traditional Christianity has been unable to see? Contemplate scripture as the mystics have, and discover the answer for yourself.

In this class you will:

1.   Become familiar with the life of Jesus as told in the New Testament.

2.   Let inner discernment bring forth clarity.

Class Details:
~ On Wednesday evenings, January 11 – February 1 from 9:30-11:30pm Eastern/6:30-8:30pm Pacific.
Homework begins January 5.
Facilitator: Rev. Jacquelyn Eckert
